I am a labour relations specialist who practised Labour and Human Rights law for more than 30 years.  I have represented clients in virtually all unionized sectors of employment and at all levels of adjudication including; mediation, arbitration, Labour Relations Boards, Human Rights Tribunal hearings and related court proceedings up to the Supreme Court of Canada.

I believe passionately in our Canadian Labour Relations Model which is founded on the skilful application of mediation and arbitration for the mutual benefit of labour and management.

My Story

I have always practised law with the highest degree of respect, integrity and ethics for all involved. My approach to mediation and arbitration practice is founded on these same principles.

During my career, I represented clients in labour relations matters in the following sectors of employment:  Municipal, Health, ICI Construction, Entertainment, Public Transportation, Industrial, Education, Federal and Provincial Government, Coast Guard, Air Traffic Control and Police.

It has been a privilege to have practised in this area of law with so many excellent Counsel, Arbitrators and Labour Representatives dedicated to advancing the law of labour relations for the benefit of all parties.

In 1991, I was a founding partner in one of Ottawa’s first specialized Labour Relations Human Rights Law firms – Raven Jewitt & Allen.  In 1997, I founded the Ottawa Labour Law firm JewittMcluckie & Associates and was consistently rated as one of the “Best Labour Lawyers in Canada” in the L’Expert Canadian Legal Directory until my retirement from private practice in 2018.

In 2000, after an intense professional appearance at the OC Transpo Inquest, I began to study yoga and meditation and became the owner of an Ottawa yoga studio. I taught yoga for 14 years and studied with teachers in India and Tibet.   In 2012, I founded a charity dedicated to providing education for underprivileged children in Tibet.

My Law and Meditation practices merged in 2017 when I co-facilitated “The Mindful Lawyer- Ethics and Mindfulness in the Practice of Law” workshop which is a Law Society CPD accredited course.

Arbitration, Mediation and Investigation

My Focus

Our successful labour relations model is built on three fundamental quasi-judicial procedures:  Impartial Investigation, Mediation and Arbitration.  Any of these tools can be completely effective in resolving disputes which naturally arise between management and unions.  Alternatively, they can all be used together or as needed to help the parties resolve an impasse that is impacting their relationship.

I know how important it is to be efficient and cost-effective in arbitration, mediation and workplace investigations.

I believe that my experience and expertise in Labour Relations will provide management and unions with creative solutions to resolve their legal disputes and challenges.

Experience

For over 30 years I practiced Labour and Human Rights law representing clients in the private and public sector at all levels of Adjudication including Mediation, Arbitration, Provincial and Federal Labour Relations Boards, Human Rights Tribunals and in related litigation in the Court system.

My Philosopy

I love the law. I especially love how our labour law jurisprudence and dispute resolution mechanisms are constantly evolving to meet the challenges of the changing workplace.

Acting as an independent third party opens up the entire labour relations playbook to help both sides find solutions that are in their mutual best interests.

While the best Labour Relations solutions are those that are negotiated between the parties, I believe that an Arbitrator or Mediator’s key role is to assist them to find those solutions.

If a negotiated solution is not possible,  then the Arbitrator’s role is to create a focused Arbitration process and render a timely decision to bring the dispute to an end.

I look forward to working with the Labour Relations Community as an independent Mediator, Arbitrator or Investigator.
